Built in the 8th Century, Kyushu's oldest wooden structure and a National Treasure.
Fukiji Temple in Bungotakada contains the oldest wooden structure still standing in Kyushu, a National Treasure built during the late Heian period to house a statue of Amida Nyorai. The entire building, including the Amida statue, was constructed from a single nutmeg tree, and a large nutmeg still grows on the grounds today. The sweeping roof is designed to resemble a phoenix. Though the vivid interior paintings have faded to faint outlines, traces of the original colors remain visible on the walls and columns. Two guardian statues flank the gate, with massive nutmeg and ginkgo trees standing sentinel at the top of the steps.
