Overview
Since Fukagawa Chūji (1871–1934) founded Fukagawa-Seiji in 1894, the kiln’s workshops and factory remain mostly unchanged.
Fukagawa-Seiji has been producing Arita porcelain since 1894, when founder Fukagawa Chuji returned from studying the techniques of Wedgwood and Meissen in Europe. The kiln was appointed official purveyor to the Imperial Household in 1910, and on the second floor of the historic showroom, you can request to view dining services made for imperial weddings, births, and state banquets. A receiving room displays commemorative pieces decorated by visiting ambassadors and naval officers going back to the 1800s. The company's logo, featuring Mt. Fuji and a river, was Chuji's way of expressing his ambitions for the business.
