藤屋
4.3Est. 1 hrGinzan, Tohoku
Overview
Eight-room ryokan on the Ginzan riverside, redesigned in 2006 by architect Kengo Kuma with bamboo screens that filter the steam and lamplight off the river.
Fujiya is one of the founding 1900s ryokan of Ginzan, but the current building is the 2006 Kengo Kuma redesign. The street facade keeps the historic kote-e plaster reliefs intact; the interior threads vertical bamboo screens through every floor so light filters and steam drifts in long horizontal slices. Eight rooms, all with private cypress tubs, all booking out months ahead of winter weekends.
Local tips
Booking opens 6 months ahead. The 4th-floor corner suite has the longest river-facing veranda.
