Overview

Tranquil forest shrine marking the historic Subashiri trailhead for Mount Fuji pilgrims.

This shrine marks the traditional start of the Subashiri climbing route up Mount Fuji. Tucked quietly into an old-growth forest, it features an impressive, moss-covered stone approach. Pilgrims historically gathered here to purify themselves in the nearby waterfalls before ascending the volcano.

Local tips

Look at the shrine's volcanic stone base; the entire area is covered in black lava ash from the devastating 1707 Hoei eruption.
