Fudokutsu and Namikiri Shrine

不動窟と波切神社
The Fudokutsu is a seaside cave much like the one that houses the main sanctuary of Udo Shrine, only smaller.
A seaside cave on the Miyazaki coast shelters this small shrine, reached in under 30 minutes on a hillside trail from Udo Shrine. The cave was originally used by ascetic monks who practiced spiritual discipline in isolated places, and later became a site of worship for local fishermen. The shrine is dedicated to deities of the sea and reflects the pre-1868 period when Shinto and Buddhism were not formally separated: Buddhist symbols decorate the nominally Shinto structure. Beside it stands a stone Fudo Myo-o carved in the Namikiri form, the wave-breaking manifestation of the deity, specifically revered as a protector of people who work the sea.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
