Overview

The Fudō-dō is a small hall within the cluster of temples and halls in the Shimo-Daigo area, dedicated to the worship of the Five Great Wisdom Kings (Godai Myō-ō).

The Fudo-do is a compact hall in the Shimo-Daigo area of Daigo-ji, dedicated to the Five Great Wisdom Kings. Its focal figure, Fudo Myo-o, the Immovable One, is one of the most powerful protective deities in Japanese Buddhism and a central figure in mountain asceticism. The hall is most alive during goma fire rituals, when monks chant powerfully in front of leaping flames while devotees join in. The smoke, sound, and ritual intent combine into something closer to an experience than a visit.

Local tips

Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
