Overview

The small structure located on a raised stone dais near the entrance to the inner sanctum (okunoin) is Fudōdō Hall.

Fudodo Hall sits on a raised stone platform near the entrance to Engyoji's inner sanctum on Mt. Shosha. Inside stands a statue of Fudo Myo-o, one of the five Wisdom Kings in Esoteric Buddhism, depicted with a fierce expression, a sword, and a noose, and shown seated on rock amid flames. These are his standard attributes as a protector who burns away spiritual obstacles. Engyoji has a deep connection to Fudo Myo-o through its guardian deities Ototen and Wakaten, who appear in temple ceremonies including the annual Festival of Peace and Bounty each January 18. The hall was originally built in 1678 and rebuilt in the 1970s using some of its original materials.
