Founder’s Hall (Kaisando)

This hall at the edge of the Tateyama pilgrimage site enshrines a wooden statue of Saeki Ariyori, the eighth-century figure credited with establishing Mt. Tate as sacred ground. The statue dates to the early Kamakura period and is an Important Cultural Property. Legend holds that Saeki encountered Amida Buddha on the mountain while hunting, and was instructed to take Buddhist precepts and commit to ascetic practice. He devoted his life to the mountain and eventually founded the village of Ashikuraji. The hall stands in quiet contrast to the larger structures nearby; the adjacent Tateyama Museum provides the fuller historical context.
