旧山中家住宅
Like many of the residences in Hamasaki, the Former Yamanaka Family Residence is the product of many generations.
Built in 1931 with an inner storehouse dating to 1771, this former merchant home in Hagi's Hamasaki district faces the main commercial street. The Yamanaka family traded mainly in dried sardines, selling to buyers in Kyoto and Osaka from the 1870s through the 1950s. The building's narrow footprint extends the full depth of the block, a characteristic Hamasaki machiya layout. Today it holds exhibits from the family's trading era, including old advertising calendars from 1915 showing Taisho-era kimono styles. Open daily, free admission.
