Overview

This property is a prime example of the type of machiya townhouses that were favored by wealthy residents of Kumagawa-juku post town in the Edo period (1603–1867).

This Edo-period machiya townhouse in Kumagawa-juku post town belonged to Henmi Kanbei, the first mayor of the town, and was built in 1858. The property originally included a sake brewery, a garden, and a storehouse that housed a large private book collection. Donated to the town in 1994 and restored over three years, it became a practical model for how traditional buildings in the post town could be updated for modern use while keeping their original appearance. Today it functions as a lodging, cafe, and souvenir shop, open on weekends and holidays from spring through autumn.
