Former Numata Church Memorial Hall

This simple clapboard building with sash windows was built in 1914 in Numata for the Protestant Church of Christ in Japan, funded by the Hoshino family, whose father had converted to Christianity after moving from the silk-farming town to the cosmopolitan port of Yokohama. His daughter Ai studied at Columbia University, earned a master's degree in education, and went on to serve thirty years as president of what is now Tsuda University, one of Japan's oldest women's colleges. The building functioned as a church until 1988, then became an art museum, and was renovated and moved to its current location in 2020.
