The blooming season begins between mid-May and mid-June with a perennial, yellow-flowering species of cinquefoil (kijimushiro; Potentilla fragarioides var.
Wakasakanai Park's blooming season unfolds in waves from mid-May through August. Yellow cinquefoil flowers open first, close to the ground in small five-petaled clusters. By late June, beach roses (hamanasu) take over with large dark pink flowers up to 10 centimeters across, growing in coastal sand dunes as they do across northeastern Japan and northeastern Asia. July brings daylilies and Siberian lilies rising tall through the grass in yellow and orange. Fringed pink flowers and a coastal morning glory variety follow in late July, closing out the season in August. The park's location along the Hokkaido coast keeps the species calendar distinct from inland gardens.
