Minami Alps

The Minami Alps have one of Japan's highest timberlines, with forests extending up to 2,700 meters. This is partly due to the mountains' southerly position and moisture-retaining soils, which support four distinct vegetation zones. Above the treeline, alpine meadows bloom with Shinano-kinbai yellow globe flowers and white Hakusan ichige anemones in summer. Lower down, Erman's birch grows sideways under the weight of winter snow, and dwarf stone pine shrinks with altitude. Hikers moving through these zones can observe the entire sequence from broadleaf lowland forest to bare summit terrain within a single day's walk.
