Eshima Ohashi Bridge
江島大橋
Overview
Take a walk to the top of the world’s “craziest bridge” for spectacular views.
Eshima Ohashi Bridge connecting Matsue in Shimane Prefecture to Sakaiminato in Tottori became an internet sensation when telephoto photographs compressed its steep gradient into what looked like a near-vertical ramp over the water. The reality is a 6.1 percent grade on the Shimane side, steep enough to feel dramatic behind the wheel but perfectly safe. At 1.7 kilometers, it is the largest rigid-frame bridge in Japan, arching high enough to let large ships pass beneath on the Nakaumi lagoon. The famous compressed perspective photograph is best captured from ground level on the Shimane side. Crossing by car or bicycle opens up views of Mt. Daisen and the surrounding waterway.
