Entsuin Temple

Mausoleum featuring hidden Western symbols and a moss garden.
Built in 1647 to honor Date Mitsumune, grandson of Sendai domain founder Date Masamune, who died at 19 under circumstances that some historians still question. The Sankeiden, an Important Cultural Property, houses a wooden equestrian statue of Mitsumune. The altar's gold-leaf paintings are unusual for their time, depicting roses, spades, clovers, and crosses in a style that likely reflects influence from Date Masamune's 1615 diplomatic expedition to Rome. The grounds include a rose garden inspired by those altar paintings, and maple trees make the temple a well-known autumn foliage spot.
