Sagami Bay clifftop observatory by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, architectural meditation on time and light.
Extraordinary art and architecture complex perched on a hillside overlooking Sagami Bay in Odawara, founded in 2017 by renowned photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto through the Odawara Art Foundation. The site integrates galleries, a Noh stage, a tea ceremony room, and landscaped gardens into a unified meditation on the passage of time, light, and the relationship between art and nature. Sugimoto designed the main gallery's 100-meter-long corridor to align precisely with the winter solstice sunrise, while salvaged historical elements like Muromachi-period stone gates are woven throughout the grounds. Visits require advance reservation with timed entry, and the limited daily capacity ensures a contemplative experience far removed from typical museum crowds.
The cafe or rest area inside is usually a welcome break mid-visit. Budget 90 minutes minimum.
