Overview

Dragon-guarded island shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, connected to the mainland with ocean views from rocky cliffs.

Enoshima Shrine is actually three distinct shrines spread across the island, each dedicated to one of the three Benten goddesses. The approach from the bridge takes you up through a covered shopping arcade before the stone torii marks the start of the shrine path. The upper sections open onto terraces with views over Sagami Bay and, on clear days, toward Fuji. The caves at the island's far end are connected to the shrine's mythology and worth visiting if your legs are up for the descent. The whole island loop takes about two hours. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the thickest crowds.
