Overview
Enkakuji was a Buddhist temple located just outside the northern walls of Shuri Castle, sometimes referred to as Tentokuzan.
Founded in 1492 by King Sho Shin as the royal family temple, Enkakuji was the head Rinzai Zen temple of the Ryukyu Kingdom and one of the clearest expressions of how the islands drew from Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cultural traditions. The compound was destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and today only the reconstructed Somon gate from 1968 survives in wood. The terraced stone-walled courtyard, lotus pond, and carved Chinese-style stone bridge still convey the original architectural intent, forming an ensemble that feels both compact and deeply layered.
Local tips
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
