Eikokuji Temple

Founded in 1408, this Soto Zen temple in Hitoyoshi holds two very different claims to attention: a ghostly legend and a chapter from the Satsuma Rebellion. A copy of a hanging scroll depicting a vengeful female ghost is displayed in the Main Hall, said to have been painted by the temple's first priest to help the spirit find peace. The temple pond, reached through the Main Hall, reflects flowering wisteria, hydrangea, cherry, and maple through the seasons. In 1877, Saigo Takamori's rebel army set up headquarters here for 33 days during the Satsuma Rebellion. Artifacts including an artillery shell and a scroll with Saigo's calligraphy are on display.
