Historic castle town in Fukui housing one of Asia's largest dinosaur museums with full-scale fossil reconstructions.
Originally built in 1579 by a feudal lord named Shibata Katsuyasu, Echizen Katsuyama Castle is one of the tallest castles in Japan. During the Tokugawa Period, Ogasawara Nobutoki began construction to raise the castle on the pretext of restoring an old castle however it was never completed due to fires. The five-tiered, six-story castle tower was eventually built in a different place in 1992.
