Sleep inside a James Turrell artwork, a traditional Japanese house with a retractable roof that frames the changing sky.

Designed by light artist James Turrell for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, the House of Light is a traditional Japanese guesthouse where the ceiling of the main room slides open to reveal a precisely framed rectangle of sky. At dusk, fiber-optic lights embedded in the floor change color in response to the fading natural light, creating a meditative interplay between earth and sky. Guests can stay overnight (sleeping on tatami beneath the open sky) or visit during the day. It's architecture, art, and spiritual experience in one.

Local tips

Book an overnight stay (up to 6 guests) to experience the sky light installation at both sunset and dawn. Sleeping under Turrell's sky frame is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
