Dorokyo Gorge

The Dorokyo section of the Kitayama River sits where Nara, Mie, and Wakayama prefectures meet. The river carved its canyon walls over millions of years through hardened volcanic rock that resisted erosion wide, forcing the water to cut deep instead, creating 50-meter cliffs from a single narrow corridor. For six centuries the river was the main timber transport route through these mountains, and log drivers walked back along what is now a hiking trail called Raftsman's Path. Today motorboats and traditional rafts carry passengers through the gorge. The calm water is also well suited for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or swimming.
