Overview
Alpine hot spring in a pilgrimage village, featuring fragrant cedar-wood interiors.
Located deep in the mountains of Nara, Dorogawa Onsen has long served as a base for Shugendo mountain ascetics. The Onsen Center is the main public facility, rebuilt with local Yoshino cedar and cypress, creating a distinctively fragrant and warm environment. The water is a mild alkaline simple spring, perfect for soothing muscles after hiking. The indoor bath features large windows overlooking the forest, while the outdoor bath allows guests to breathe in the crisp mountain air.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
