Overview

These rolling highlands, located about 900 meters above sea level, are favored by hikers and wildflower-lovers.

The Donden Highland on Sado Island rises to about 900 meters above sea level, high enough that alpine plants normally found above 1,500 meters on the mainland manage to grow here, a phenomenon locals call the summit effect. From March through October, more than two dozen wildflower species bloom along the trails, including Japanese hepatica in spring and dogtooth violets in April and May. Trail routes range from two and a half hours to seven hours, with views over valleys and the Sea of Japan. Accommodation is available at the Donden Highland Lodge. The peaks stay grassy and open year-round because harsh winter winds keep the trees stunted.
