道後温泉本館
Japan's oldest hot spring with a bathhouse that inspired Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.
Three-story wooden bathhouse built in 1894, one of Japan's oldest continually operating hot spring facilities and the first public bathhouse designated an Important Cultural Property. The labyrinthine interior, with its stairways and low-ceilinged rooms, is said to have inspired the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film Spirited Away. Bathing options range from the general Kami no Yu bath to the more private Tama no Yu with its own relaxation rooms. The Yushinden, a private bath reserved for the Imperial Family, can be toured separately. After bathing, visitors traditionally stroll through the adjacent shopping arcade wearing yukata, picking up local dango and mikan.
Operated as a public bathhouse since 1894, making it one of Japan's oldest continuously running hot spring facilities. The main ground-floor bath (Kami-no-Yu) is shared. Private tatami rest rooms on the upper floors are available for an additional charge and include tea service. The spring water is sodium bicarbonate: colorless, odorless, and alkaline. Arrive at the 6am opening on weekdays for the lightest crowds. Confirm which sections are open before visiting, as restoration work has been ongoing since 2019.
