Overview

Dramatic wave-carved rock formations stretch along Miyazaki's coast, creating natural stair-step patterns.

Demon's Washboard, or Oni no Washboard, stretches along the Miyazaki coast as a long flat shelf of alternating hard and soft rock layers that erosion has carved into a corrugated pattern. The name comes from the ridged surface, which does look like an old wooden washboard running out into the surf. At low tide, tiny pools form in the grooves, holding sea glass, shells, and small marine life. The rock shelf extends for about 800 meters along the coast road, and the walking path alongside gives a close view of the patterns. It's best visited during an outgoing tide, when the full shelf is exposed and the pools are most active.
