Demachi Masugata Shotengai
market
出町桝形商店街
A retro covered shopping arcade where Kyoto locals buy daily groceries, featured in the anime 'Tamako Market'.
Demachi Masugata is a 170-meter covered arcade near the Kamo River delta where Kyoto residents shop for tofu, pickles, mochi, and fresh fish. The arcade gained fame as the inspiration for the anime Tamako Market, drawing a mix of local shoppers and anime pilgrims. Furukawacho Shotengai next door extends the old-school shopping experience.
Try the famous 'demachi futaba' mame-mochi (bean rice cake) from the shop at the arcade entrance. Locals queue for it.
