From late January to early March, 6,000 plum trees bloom red and white. Several million pilgrims and students visit annually, many of them students praying before exams. Arrive when the gates open at 6:30 AM to see the historic main hall, rebuilt in 1591, before the crowds form.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
