Overview
Dazaifu Exhibition Hall traces the history of Dazaifu from the seventh century through to modern-day excavation efforts.
The Dazaifu Exhibition Hall, near the entrance to the Government Office Ruins, traces the city's history from the seventh century through active excavation work ongoing today. Inside, you'll find detailed dioramas showing how ancient Dazaifu once looked, decades of excavation photographs, and an onigawara, a fierce demon-faced roof tile that once guarded government buildings. The hall also explains how the name Reiwa, Japan's current imperial era, was inspired by a poem composed at a plum blossom party held in Dazaifu in 730. English explanations are available throughout.
