River gorge where 50-meter cliffs frame emerald pools, spectacular when maples blaze red.
Dangyokei Gorge in Ounanchou, Shimane Prefecture, is a dramatic river gorge where sheer cliffs rise 50 meters above emerald pools carved by centuries of flowing water. The gorge stretches for about two kilometers along the Shimizu River, with a walking trail that follows the riverbank past unique rock formations, natural swimming holes, and cascading mini-falls. Autumn is the most spectacular time to visit, when the maple trees clinging to the cliff faces blaze red and orange, their reflections doubling the color in the still pools below. The gorge sees relatively few tourists despite its beauty, offering a peaceful escape into Shimane's mountainous interior, and the nearby village has a handful of modest restaurants serving local river fish and mountain vegetables.
