Dangyō Falls
壇鏡の滝
Overview
Drive through dark forest passing no houses until you reach a Shinto gateway flanked by 2 gigantic ancient trees.
Dangyo Falls sits deep in the forests of Okinoshima, one of the remote Oki Islands off Shimane Prefecture. The approach takes you along a forest road past a Shinto torii flanked by ancient trees before the twin waterfalls appear, cascading down a moss-covered cliff face behind a small shrine. What makes this place unusual is that you can walk behind the falls and feel the mist from inside the rock overhang. The site has served as a Shinto purification ground for centuries, and the spiritual weight of the place is easy to feel. Getting here requires a ferry to the Oki Islands, which only adds to the sense of pilgrimage.
