The oldest building in the greater Tokyo region, Daizenji's main hall dates to 1286 and is a designated National Treasure. According to legend, the priest Gyoki had a vision of the Medicine Buddha holding grapes in 718, prompting him to teach viticulture to the local community. The temple is credited with establishing Koshu grape cultivation, making it the spiritual birthplace of Japanese winemaking.
