Dairakyo Gorge
nature
大良峡
A quiet river gorge in the Shirakami foothills with a gentle walking trail through old-growth beech forest and volcanic rock formations.
Dairakyo is a narrow gorge carved by the Oiragawa River through volcanic rock in the foothills of the Shirakami Mountains. A flat, well-maintained trail follows the river for about 2km through towering beech trees, passing moss-covered boulders and small cascades. Unlike the more famous Oirase Gorge, Dairakyo sees almost no visitors and offers genuine solitude in one of Japan's most pristine forest environments.
The gorge is particularly atmospheric after light rain when mist hangs in the beech canopy. The trail is flat enough for casual walkers, but bring rain gear as weather changes quickly in the Shirakami.
