Daikokuten
観世音寺大黒天
3.5Est. 90Dazaifu, Kyushu
JTA Approved
Forget the round, smiling figure on rice bales. This late-Heian period Daikokuten is slender and severe, recalling its origins as an Indian war deity. Carved from a single block of camphor, it is one of the oldest known images of its kind in Japan. Remove shoes before entering the hall.
Local tips
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
