Overview
Shichigahama is an important area for archaeological excavation, as the peninsula was the site of a thriving village during the Jomon period (10,000–300 BCE).
The Daigigakoi Shell Mound on Shichigahama Peninsula is one of the more significant Jomon-period sites in the Tohoku region, protected as a National Historic Site since 1968. Archaeologists have found shells, tools, bones, and pottery here that paint a detailed picture of life between 10,000 and 300 BCE. The adjacent Shichigahama Historical Museum displays those finds, including pottery with the swirling uzumaki patterns characteristic of the region, as well as later objects like nori-making equipment and a reconstructed traditional interior. The site is surrounded by a 19-hectare park with walking paths and over 200 cherry trees that bloom each spring.
