2017 Kengo Kuma-designed contemporary art museum on the south side of Yufuin valley; small, deep collection.
A 2017 contemporary art museum designed by Kengo Kuma for the COMICO publishing group, sitting on the south side of the Yufuin valley with views back toward Mt Yufu. The building uses local cedar in vertical louvers wrapped around a concrete core, with a tea garden as the entry approach. The collection is small but deep: Yoshitomo Nara, Hiroshi Senju, Takashi Murakami in dedicated rooms designed around individual pieces.
Local tips
Reservations required, closed Tuesdays. The Yoshitomo Nara room (the entire room is one Nara installation) is the standout. Combine with a walk back to Lake Kinrin (20 minutes).
