Coast Guard Academy Red Brick Hall
landmark
海上保安大学校煉瓦ホール
Built in 1914 as the machine room for a gunpowder mill at the former Naval Arsenal, the Red Brick Hall survived World War II air raids intact while most of the surrounding complex was demolished or rebuilt. The building is 36 meters long, with a wood-frame slate roof and concrete floor replacing the original wood planks. Its Western architectural style reflects the close ties between the Japanese Imperial Navy and the British Royal Navy at the time of its construction. The Coast Guard Academy relocated here in 1952 and now uses the hall as a multipurpose building. It was designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the city of Kure in 2017.
