Overview

Chairlift & cable-car station for rides through forest to a 17th-century castle on a hilltop.

Chojyaganaru Station serves as the starting point for the aerial journey up to Matsuyama Castle, one of Japan's twelve remaining original castles. Visitors can choose between a cable car offering panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea, or a single-seat chairlift that glides through the forest canopy for a more intimate experience with the surrounding nature. The ride takes about three minutes and deposits you near the castle's impressive stone walls and main keep, which dates to the 17th century. The hilltop grounds are one of Shikoku's premier cherry blossom viewing spots in spring, and the autumn foliage framing the castle tower is equally spectacular.
