A thousand thin threads of water run down a 20-meter-wide wall of moss-covered volcanic rock near Kowakidani Station in Hakone. The falls were popularized in the early nineteenth century by the founder of Mikawaya Ryokan, who built a hiking path and teahouse here to attract guests to his inn. The falls drew steady crowds through the Taisho era, and while earthquakes have altered the rock face over time, the walk from the station remains about 20 minutes. Autumn is the most rewarding time to visit, when the surrounding foliage adds color against the damp stone. The sight is best experienced early in the day before the trail gets busy.
