Overview
Seven nationally designated samurai gardens using borrowed mountain scenery behind 18th-century stone walls.
A 700-meter street of preserved Satsuma samurai residences in the town called Little Kyoto of the South. Seven nationally designated scenic gardens use trimmed hedges and borrowed scenery from surrounding mountains to create miniature landscapes within walled compounds. Each garden has a distinct style, some are dry-rock karesansui, others incorporate water features. The stone walls lining the avenue date to the 1700s.
Local tips
Visit right after rain. The moss glows vivid green and the stone paths develop beautiful reflections.
