Final departure airbase for hundreds of kamikaze pilots during World War II, now memorial museum.
The Chiran Peace Museum in Minamikyushu stands on the site of the former airbase that served as the final departure point for hundreds of young kamikaze pilots in the closing months of World War II. Inside, personal letters, photographs, uniforms, and belongings create an experience that crosses language barriers, bringing individual faces to what can feel like an abstracted historical chapter. Most of the men were in their late teens and early twenties. Four restored aircraft are on display. Nearby, a well-preserved samurai district with Edo-period gardens and stone walls provides a quieter contrast to the museum's emotional weight.
