Perched atop Mount Godai, Chikurinji is one of the most beautiful temples on the 88-temple pilgrimage circuit. Its five-story pagoda rises above a canopy of bamboo and camphor trees, and the Muromachi-era garden is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. The temple grounds are peaceful and the views of Kochi city extend to the Pacific.

The Muromachi garden (400 yen extra) is the hidden gem within the gem — designed by the same team as Kyoto's Tenryuji.
