A UNESCO World Heritage temple complex where the dazzling Konjikido hall, covered entirely in gold leaf, has sheltered the mummified remains of the Fujiwara clan lords for over 900 years. This golden sanctuary represents the pure land Buddhist belief in paradise on earth, its interior adorned with mother-of-pearl inlay and lacquerwork of extraordinary refinement. The surrounding temple grounds feature ancient cryptomeria trees and a treasure hall displaying priceless Heian-period artifacts.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
