Central Tokushima
landmark
Tokushima City's downtown core: the castle ruins in Central Park, the Awa Odori dance hall, and the Shinmachi River corridor.
The compact downtown of Tokushima City, anchored by the Tokushima Castle Ruins in Central Park and the Bizan Ropeway rising directly behind it. The Awa Odori Kaikan honors the city's signature summer dance year-round, while the Shinmachi River and its bridges thread through a riverside walking corridor of markets, indigo-dyeing workshops, and the Hyotanjima sightseeing cruise. Most of the city's first-day anchors sit within a fifteen-minute walk of JR Tokushima Station.
Time a visit around the Awa Odori festival in mid-August if possible; otherwise the Awa Odori Kaikan runs daily demonstrations. Bizan Ropeway in late afternoon gives sunset over the river.
