Cape Oma

Cape Oma sits at the very northern tip of Honshu, the closest point on the main island to Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. On clear days you can see Hokkaido's mountains from the observation area. A large tuna sculpture marks the cape, a nod to the local fishing industry and the bluefin tuna caught in these waters, which are among the most prized in Japan. A small restaurant serves tuna dishes, and a gift shop carries local products. It's a stark, windswept place with open ocean in three directions. Getting here requires a long drive or bus journey through remote Aomori countryside, which is part of the appeal.
