室戸岬
Promontory featuring an observation area with sweeping ocean views & unique rock formations.
This windswept cape on Kochi's southeastern tip is a UNESCO Global Geopark, shaped by the Kuroshio Current crashing against rock formations over millennia. A shoreline trail winds past bizarre stone pillars, tidal pools, and salt-twisted vegetation. Kukai, who later founded Shingon Buddhism as Kobo Daishi, is said to have achieved enlightenment meditating in the sea cave Mikurodo here, and it remains a pilgrimage site on the 88-temple route. A white lighthouse tops the cape with 360-degree Pacific views. The area's deep-sea water, drawn from the Kuroshio Current, is used in local cosmetics and onsen facilities in the small town below.
A UNESCO Global Geopark where the subducting Pacific Plate has pushed ancient ocean-floor rocks to the surface over millions of years. The monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism) meditated at the cave here (Mikurodo) in the late 8th century before traveling to China; the cave is accessible below the lighthouse and near Temple 24 of the Shikoku pilgrimage. The road from Cape Muroto north toward Kochi follows an uplifted coral reef terrace, one of the most visible examples of active tectonic uplift in Japan. The cape is about 2.5 hours by bus from Kochi City.
