Cape Higashi

4.5Est. 90Miyakojima, Okinawa

Overview

Easternmost point of Okinawa's main island, where dramatic cliffs meet the Pacific Ocean at sunrise.

Cape Higashi sits on the eastern edge of Miyakojima, where the land ends in dark volcanic rock above clear water. A paved path from the small car park leads to a lighthouse at the headland, and the walk takes about ten minutes each way. The cape is one of the better sunrise spots on the island, with the light coming up directly over the ocean in front of you. Vegetation hugs the path, and the air smells of sea salt and tropical plants. It's a short visit, about thirty minutes total, but the combination of the lighthouse, the rock formations, and the open water makes it worth including in a Miyakojima morning itinerary.
