Cape Chikyu
Overview
100-meter sheer cliff jutting into the Pacific, named for the visible curvature of the earth on its 360-degree horizon.
A weather-station promontory south of Muroran where the Pacific coast bends sharply, giving an unbroken horizon over the ocean. On clear days the curvature of the earth is just visible at the seam between water and sky. A small lighthouse and observation deck sit at the cliff edge, with a separate observation point reachable by a short walk. The cape was voted Hokkaido's top scenic point in a 1985 NHK poll.
Local tips
Sunrise here is a Hokkaido tradition for new-year visitors. Bring layers — the cliff is exposed to the Pacific wind even in summer.
