Overview

The Bokke Walking Trail stretches from Marimo-no-Sato Pier on the shore of Lake Akan to the Akankohan Eco-museum Center.

This trail along the shore of Lake Akan runs from Marimo-no-Sato Pier to the Akankohan Eco-museum Center, about a forty-five-minute walk through forest. Along the way, volcanic mud pools known as bokke bubble at the surface, steam and volcanic gases escaping through vents in the earth. The Ainu name pofuke means to bubble up. The trail merges with a forest path through mixed coniferous and deciduous trees, with panels identifying Sakhalin spruce, Yezo spruce, and Katsura along the route. It is a comfortable walk with interesting geology and a good introduction to Akan-Mashu National Park without requiring much elevation gain.
