Biwako Ōtsu-kan
landmark
びわ湖大津館
Elegant 1934 hotel turned cultural space, with restaurants & shops in a flower-filled lakeside park.
This 1934 lakefront building in Otsu started life as one of Lake Biwa's premier resort hotels, and the restored art deco interiors still carry that original confidence. High ceilings, ornamental plasterwork, and wide windows frame Japan's largest lake, while an English-style garden and lakeside promenade invite an easy afternoon stroll. The rooftop terrace and lakeside cafe are best in late afternoon when the light softens over the water. Restaurants, shops, and exhibition spaces now occupy the interior. Miidera Temple and the Michigan cruise boat are both within easy reach, making it a natural anchor for a day in Otsu.
